Mike Vander Baan is the Chief Operating Officer for Ballantyne Medical Associates®, a multi-site medical clinic dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care and operational excellence. With over 20 years of experience in healthcare administration, Mike is responsible for streamlining processes across all locations and driving strategic growth initiatives. A results oriented leader, Mike specializes in optimizing clinic workflows, enhancing patient experience and ensuring regulatory compliance. Mike is passionate about fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration to achieve organizational goals and improve health outcomes.
Prior to joining BMA, Mike served as the Chief Strategy Officer at Starmount Healthcare Management. In this role, he played a pivotal part in collaborating with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and local health departments to establish COVID-19 testing and vaccination sites, particularly focusing on underserved populations. His leadership contributed to over 1.4 million COVID-19 tests, vaccinations, and monoclonal antibody treatments being administered.
Previously, Mike was the Chief Operating Officer at Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates, the largest neurosurgery group in the U.S. There, he spearheaded operational improvements across 10 clinic sites, managed hospital partnerships, and drove strategic growth initiatives. Mike also held senior management roles at Carolinas Healthcare System (now Atrium Health), where he directed the strategic operations of the Neuroscience Institute, achieving significant advancements in population health management through innovative partnerships.
As a healthcare executive, Mike is committed to enhancing patient care quality and expanding healthcare access across communities. His expertise spans clinical program development and operational management in both inpatient and outpatient settings, consistently delivering growth, efficiency, and improved patient satisfaction.
Mike holds an MBA from Queens University of Charlotte and a BA in Business from Calvin University. He also completed the Intermountain Advanced Training Program, focusing on quality improvement and outcome management in healthcare.
Mike has served two terms on the Board of the Charlotte Rescue Mission, an organization dedicated to aiding individuals at the crossroads of homelessness and addiction. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife Leslie, their children Isla and John, and their dogs, Cruz and Karl.
